He’s done it! SunSport football reporter Neil Custis has won his ‘Pounds v Points’ challenge.
Manchester-based Custis, 48, who covers United and City, devised a wager with Louis van Gaal after the Man U boss called him “Fat Man” at the end of a press conference in mid-January.
Geordie Custis felt he could lose more lbs than van Gaal won points by the end of the season.
Bookmaker Paddy Power put up £1,000 for a charity of the winner’s choice. Custis is donating the money to British Red Cross.
With intensive training to 11.30am on Sunday May 15, Custis lost 32.6lb. At the start of the challenge, he weighed 250lb.
This edged out van Gaal who, following the postponed home match against Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon, ended up with 32 more points as the Red Devils beat the south coast side 3-1 to complete their Premier League programme last night (Tuesday).
Custis said: “It was very tough, particularly getting the last few pounds off.
“I was at a place called Northern Boot Camp, near Bamburgh on the Northumberland coast in the closing week for a full-on push.
“I’m just so glad now he called me ‘fat man’ as it inspired me to do this and I aim to keep going.”
