  • Rupert Murdoch, owner of The Adelaide News, Sydney Mirror and The Australian, in Australia buys The News of The World and becomes Managing Director of News of the World Organisation Ltd, his first foray into the British newspaper industry. The first issue of the News of the World, under his ownership is published three days later (the title was first published on October 1 1843).

  • First issue of The Sun published in tabloid format and under the ownership of Rupert Murdoch, bought from IPC.

  • News International Limited is formed under a change of name from News of the World Organisation Limited.

  • Rupert Murdoch buys Times Newspapers Limited.

  • Sunday, the News of the World’s colour magazine launched.

  • News International Limited is renamed News International plc.

  • The Classified Advertisements section of The Sunday Times is the first publication to be printed at Wapping.

  • The Sun and The Times publish their first issues from Wapping.

  • Rupert Murdoch buys Today from Lonhro. (The First issue of Today, Britain’s first colour national daily newspaper, was launched by Eddie Shah on March 4 1986).

  • Last issue of Today published.

  • First day of printing at Kells in Ireland. 15,000 copies of The Times produced.

  • News International plc is renamed News International Limited.

  • News Corporation announces the investment of over £600 million in new printing plants for News International at Eurocentral in Glasgow, Knowsley and Broxbourne.

  • News International sells TSL Education Limited, including The Times Educational Supplement and The Times Higher Education Supplement to Exponent Private Equity.

  • First issue of thelondonpaper.

  • Rupert Murdoch and Alex Salmond open the Eurocentral printing plant.

  • First newspapers printed at Broxbourne - Last newspapers printed at Wapping on April 20.

  • The last issue of thelondonpaper is published.

  • Fabulous replaces Sunday as the News of the World’s magazine.

  • Launch of the Heals that Heal charity campaign by Fabulous to raise funds for Wellbeing of Women [WOW], whose patron is Sarah Brown.

  • Christmas Day iPad editions of The Times and The Sun are published [no print editions published].

  • News International Ltd becomes NI Group Ltd. News International remains as the trading name of the business.

  • The last issue of the News of the World is published. Fabulous continues publication as part of The Sun.

  • NI Group Ltd becomes News UK & Ireland Ltd as part of the worldwide split of News Corporation into two companies, News Corporation (the publishing business) and 21st Century Fox (the TV and film business), which took place on June 28. News UK becomes the trading name of the UK business.

  • News UK moves to The News Building in London Bridge.

  • News UK completes the acquisition of Wireless Group.

  • News UK announces the launch of TalkTV

  • Lachlan Murdoch is appointed the sole Chair of News Corp and Rupert Murdoch is appointed as Chairman Emeritus of News Corp.
