The Sunday Times Insight Editor Jonathan Calvert and Assistant Editor Heidi Blake have been announced as joint winners of the coveted Paul Foot Award for their investigation into the Fifa Files.
The award - which was set up in the memory of campaigning journalist Paul Foot - aims to recognise the tenacity and diligence involved in investigative and campaigning journalism.
Over months of work, The Sunday Times Insight team obtained hundreds of millions of secret documents, leaked by a whistleblower from the heart of football.
The Paul Foot awards team noted that, in forensic detail, Heidi and Jonathan reported on an extraordinary campaign waged by Mohammed Bin Hammam, Qatar’s top football official, and how he exploited his position to help secure the votes Qatar needed to win the bid to host the 2022 World Cup.
Their groundbreaking work is featured in the award-winning Unquiet Film Series, which can be viewed here.
Heidi Blake said:
We're absolutely thrilled to have won the Paul Foot Award, which consistently celebrates the sort of unflinchingly challenging public interest journalism we admire and aspire to. FIFA still refuses to take note of our mountain of evidence showing how badly the World Cup bidding process was corrupted, but winning this award is a great encouragement and we have more explosive revelations coming soon in our book, The Ugly Game.
In separate awards news, News UK has 21 nominations in the LSL Property Press Award.
The Sunday Times has 15 nominations including four nominations in both the Scoop of the Year and Lifestyle Interiors Property Writer of the Year categories.
The awards - which are being presented in London on March 16 - recognise the outstanding work and achievements of the UK's leading property journalists.
