The winners of Newsmakers’ Best Campaign award Sophie Spencer, Head of Agency Sales, Travel, Natalie McLean, Product Manager, Sun Travel and Georgie Lamden, Sales Manager, Travel, are the brains behind Give Us A Break, The Sun’s campaign to get its readers travelling around the world again.
Newsmakers is News UK Commercial’s recognition programme, shining a light on exceptional work.
Tempting readers with exclusive deals and partnerships, the cross-departmental campaign, which was backed by editorial and marketing, who supported it with coverage in print and online and promotion across our social channels and newsletters, aimed to:
- Give Sun readers a range of exclusive deals to get them travelling again
- Support our travel industry partners who have been badly hit by Covid
- Bring more advertisers to The Sun
Can you tell us a bit more about the campaign?
It was a new concept born out of an innovation session and a multi channel campaign across print, digital and social led by editorial with commercial partners buying in with a set package rate. It was also the first time commercial, partnerships & editorial have all worked together.
If you had to describe this campaign in 3 words, what would they be?
- Proactive
- Positive
- Prosperous
What were the biggest challenges you faced?
Trying to launch a travel campaign during the pandemic, when travel was deemed illegal…it took 3 attempts to launch!
What was the inspiration behind the campaign?
Lack of travel revenue, particularly against the Sun so it needed every bit of help, focus and support from the team.
What were the highlights?
- Give Us A Break was the most successful travel campaign in The Sun generating £110k of incremental revenue.
- Collaborating with various stakeholders around the business such as editorial and marketing.
- Winning new clients such as easyJet, Thomas Cook and BA Holidays.
If you could go back and do something differently, would you? If so, what would you change?
We would work to slightly longer deadlines to allow for a more streamline process when working with various stakeholders around the business.
