Colleagues from talkSPORT came together to celebrate their work encouraging disadvantaged youngsters into sports journalism after another successful year working with the Raheem Sterling Foundation.
The partnership sees our staff visit young people at Ark Elvin Academy, Raheem’s old school in Brent, and the HideOut youth centre near his old club Manchester City to run a series of after school classes covering interviewing, writing and podcasting.
The youngsters had the chance to interview Darren Bent and ex-Man United star Danny Webber and have their articles published on talkSPORT.com.
They later learned how to make podcasts ahead of this season’s Manchester derby.
Project lead and talkSPORT Editor Sarah Collins said: “This project is making a real difference to these youngsters’ lives.
“Two young people on the programme have now secured their first jobs reporting on Non-League football for their local newspaper group.
“It is so heartwarming watching the kids’ confidence grow.”
Next year, the project aims to get even bigger with more sessions for the aspiring journalists as well as our first paid work for some of our older candidates. To get involved contact sarah.collins@talksport.co.uk and jess.lee@news.co.uk
Special thanks to Luke Henry, Kweku Afari, Natasha Everitt, Sean O’Brien and Toni Afoke for volunteering their time for the project.
