Data Scientist Adam MacVeigh talks about being fascinated by his field of work, using AI to solve problems and his most treasured possession.

We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the working day: so what was on the menu this morning?

I use data and machine learning to solve problems.

Lay a bit of context on that?

Most of my work has been using Natural Language Processing to assist in the moderation of comments, using AI to predict the toxicity of every comment made – and to catch and remove harmful content. Also, clustering those comments into themes to get insight into what’s got people talking over the week.

What attracted you to the role in the first place?

The future of the field is fascinating and I get to work on a variety of problems.

What’s the most interesting/challenging part of your job?

The initial phase of figuring out how to approach a business need.

Last book, film, binge watch and sounds you consumed?

Last book was Do No Harm by Henry Marsh. It’s a fascinating and candid insight into a neurosurgeon’s life.
Last binge-watch was Time, I watched all three episodes in one day.

Who is your role model? And why?

My mother, for her unrelenting kindness and outlook on life.

What is your most treasured possession?

My PC!

Who would play you in the film of your life?

Ezra Koenig.

Last holiday destination? And why?

Lyme Regis/Dorset, where I’m writing this from! I wanted to get away for a week of walks, seafood and relaxing with my partner – hopefully, the weather will hold out!

You’ve won ten million on the Lottery – what do you do?

After the obligatory paying off of family mortgages, I’d probably buy a nice house and put the rest in the bank to be honest!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

To look for the best in others and that everyone has bad days.

What one bit of advice would you give someone wanting to do your job?

Just give it a go. I’ve learned more on projects than I ever have on courses.

I sang the silent night solo in the year six Christmas play!
