Sharon Kang

Finance Manager

Finance Manager Sharon Kang talks about working on the exciting launch of our new TV channel and reveals that her most  treasured possession is… a bottle of Tabasco!

We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the working day: so what was on the menu this morning?

I wish I could say something cool and healthy but… I have a black coffee and two (ok three) ginger biscuits.

Sum up what you do at News UK in the shortest sentence possible.

Finance Manager for TV.

Lay a bit of context on that?

I look after the budget, forecasting and reporting for the TV arm of our broadcasting business.

What attracted you to the role in the first place?

It’s something new and exciting for News UK and I knew it would be a rewarding challenge.

What’s the most interesting/challenging part of your job?

I would say the most interesting part is working with all the incredible people. We have an amazingly experienced team on board to launch this and they are led by some great personalities. I am learning new things every day.

The most challenging part is managing the finance processes and controls for a creative business within a corporate company. It’s not as straightforward but we’re learning every day.

What are the three most important things on your working agenda today?

I wouldn’t work in Finance if I didn’t say…Outlook, outlook and outlook!

Last book, film, binge watch and sounds you consumed?

Book: Blue by John Sutherland.

Film: The Paw Patrol movie, my nephew’s choice.

Binge-watch: Money Heist. A show that has a storyline so ridiculous that it’s great!

Sounds: Jorja Smith essentials playlist.

Who is your role model? And why?

My sister because she has this fantastic ability to not let a single thing get to her and she can laugh off absolutely anything. She definitely got the ‘calm’ genes!

What is your most treasured possession?

The bottle of Tabasco I carry everywhere – because I can’t eat anything without it!

Who would play you in the film of your life?

Gina Rodriguez.

I think she’s a brilliant actress and she already has the sarcastic facial expressions and dramatic hand movements nailed.

Last holiday destination? And why?

Montenegro! It was sunny, pretty and had lots of great wine.

You’ve won ten million on the Lottery – what do you do?

Buy a massive farm and adopt as many abandoned dogs as possible and let them run around happily in the farm all day.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

‘Don’t take it personally’.

What one bit of advice would you give someone wanting to do your job?

Firstly, good luck. Secondly, I’d say go to every meeting you’re invited to – yesterday’s news is old news in this job!

Tell us something not many people know about you…?

I represented my Borough in the under 16’s London Youth Games for Javelin throwing when I was 11. I did not win.

Who would be your three Fantasy Dinner Party guests? And why?

1. My Grandma
2. Jonathan Van Ness
3. Robert Downey Jnr.
I cannot explain how funny a conversation between these three would be – especially because my Grandma cannot speak fluent English.
