Megan Johnstone-Mackie

Marketing Manager, News Live

We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the working day: so what was on the menu this morning?

I try to practise intermittent fasting most days, but I still have milk in my coffee! I make a fresh pot every morning as I enjoy the mindful process of making it.

Sum up what you do at News UK in the shortest sentence possible.

I ensure the delivery of attendees across all News Live events, in addition to this, I ensure consistency and standard of marketing.

Lay a bit of context on that?

Heading up the marketing team at News Live, we provide marketing support to the wider events team to help them deliver attendees to both virtual and in person events. This may be copywriting support, sharing best practices, aiding with coverage across the wider News UK brands and more. We are constantly striving to build a wide audience base ensuring that we have a strong base of relevant individuals for each of our event verticals.

We also provide consistent and clean marketing collateral for the teams to use to ensure that anything produced, e.g. emails, sales materials, social media assets, slots in, and is up to standard, with the wider News UK brands.

What attracted you to the role in the first place?

I thrive off of the buzz of events and always have done. From exhibitions to music festivals, the way that the events team pulls together in the weeks leading up is exhilarating. At News Live, I am lucky enough to work with an incredible team on such a wide variety of events – no day is the same!

What’s the most interesting/challenging part of your job?

Spinning plates! Ensuring that all events get relevant attention and support.

Last book, film, binge watch and sounds you consumed?

  • Audiobook – The Man She Never Met – Annie Hulley
  • Music – Florence and the Machine, Jack Johnson
  • Podcast – Redhanded Podcast – True Crime! Absolutely addicted.
  • Series – Killing Eve

Who is your role model? And why?

The minimalists – loving people and not things! Has changed the way I view the world, what I spend my time on and so much more.

What is your most treasured possession?

A Steiff bear my grandmother bought for me when I was 9, his name is Ted bear – very inventive!

Last holiday destination? And why?

Iceland – my partner and I needed to be around nature and away from the city after a year and half of grey buildings during lockdown. We needed to breathe and be reminded of the beauty of the world again.

You’ve won ten million on the Lottery – what do you do?

Pay off the mortgage, distribute to my parents and siblings and then go on a bonkers extended holiday! Probably go on a bit of a designer shopping spree – I LOVE fashion.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Always be kind. People don’t remember the things that you say, they remember how you made them feel. I try to always be kind and lift people up when they need it.

What one bit of advice would you give someone wanting to do your job?

My advice would be to gain as much experience and knowledge as possible in the industry that you want to be in, nothing should be below you. This may mean hard grafting outside of your day job but it is all worth it in the end.

Don’t be scared to change roles. Squiggly careers are the new normal – I would suggest trying to work out what you enjoy, where you want to be and then little by little work towards that everyday. I started out working for free at various festivals whilst at university to gain event experience, then my first three roles between 23 and 28 years were in B2B UK and international events. In order to make the transition to music festivals I again worked for free on music events outside of my day job, then when I finally made the move I had to take a pay cut. Without such a varied career in the events industry, I wouldn’t be able to be in the varied position that I am in now. Whilst general marketing practices can be applied to both, to actually have work experience in both industries is key.

Tell us something not many people know about you…?

I have a vintage business side hustle that I started during lockdown! It is named after the lingerie shop that my grandma owned in the 1980s, Gigi.

Who would be your three Fantasy Dinner Party guests?

Lady Gaga, Robin Williams, Marilyn Monroe

What are the biggest events you’ve got coming up at News Live and what have been your favourite to work on in the past?

RunFestRun taking place 20-22nd May at Englefield House, Berkshire. Last year’s RunFestRun, along with Life Lessons Festival, was my favourite event that I have ever worked on. The team is incredible, a really supportive and hardworking group.
