Alex Hughes

Producer at Virgin Radio UK

We speak to Alex Hughes, Producer at Virgin Radio UK, about relocating to London, appreciating the position you are in, and having freedom to be creative.

We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the working day: so what was on the menu this morning?
This morning it was a trusty bowl of Coco-Pops.

Sum up what you do at News UK in the shortest sentence possible.
I produce evenings on Virgin Radio and help wherever I’m needed across the station.

Lay a bit of context on that?
I’m looking after the wonderful Steve Denyer on Virgin Radio’s Evening Show and work across the stations on other bits; particularly at the moment it has been the Sunday Specials which are great fun! So far, I’ve produced album specials with Tears for Fears and Franz Ferdinand and an International Women’s Day special with Jayne Middlemiss.

What attracted you to the role in the first place?
The view of course! How could you turn that down? Oh and of course producing on a national station! I’ve been a fan of Virgin Radio since it launched and it’s always seemed like an exciting place to work with a lovely team. Also, London life. You’ve got to give it a go at least once in life, right?

What’s the most interesting/challenging part of your job?
Probably the freedom to be creative. This is really interesting to me because it’s something I’ve not really had at any workplace before. Also! The really interesting people I get to meet while working, such as Tears for Fears, Franz Ferdinand and the wonderful Graham Norton.

What are the three most important things on your working agenda today
Editing the Franz Ferdinand album special, making sure Steve’s show is all good to go AND answering these questions, of course.

Last book, film, binge watch and sounds you consumed?
Book – The Paris Appartment by Lucy Foley
Film – The Batman
Watch – Derry Girls
Sounds – SmartLess (podcast)

Who is your role model? And why?
Tough question! I’ll say David Tennant. He never seems to stop working hard but always seem so humbled and surprised when he is rewarded for his hard work. He clearly loves what he does and never seems to make his job feel like work. He also just seems like a lovely man with great hair.

What is your most treasured possession?
A Postman Pat teddy from my Taid that lives on a shelf on my room in Wales

Who would play you in the film of your life?
Robert Webb

Last holiday destination? And why?
Paris! Because I really wanted to eat some nice bread and get the Eurostar.

You’ve won ten million on the Lottery – what do you do?
Probably buy a house. And a lovely bottle of whisky.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
“Find a job you love and never work a day in your life”

What one bit of advice would you give someone wanting to do your job?
Radio is always fun, no matter what role you’re in! Just don’t try to rush it, enjoy the ride and always appreciate the position you’re in.

Tell us something not many people know about you…?
Until the age of 14, my dream job was to be a lawyer. I think I just enjoyed arguing.

Who would be your three Fantasy Dinner Party guests? And why?
David Tennant, David Bowie, Steve Carrel. Imagine the conversations.
