The Times named Newspaper of the Year by London Press Club
The Times won Newspaper of the Year at yesterday’s London Press Club awards.
The judges said;
"The Times’s campaigns and investigations during the year impressed the judges. Particularly the Clean It Up campaign and its expose of the scandal of British Gas ….. Judges were also impressed with its Westminster exclusives and the work of foreign correspondents including Anthony Loyd and Catherine Philp."
In the individual awards, Steven Swinford won Political Journalist of the Year, Michael Atherton was awarded Sports Journalist of the Year, and Brough Scott was highly commended in the Sports Journalist category. The Times’ Clean It Up campaign, focused on highlighting the polluted state of Britain’s rivers and seas, was highly commended for the Cudlipp award for Campaigning and Investigative Journalism.
The judges said Political Editor Steven Swinford ‘excels at holding power to account’ making him the ‘standout choice’. They praised Chief Cricket Correspondent Michael Atherton’s ‘unmatched knowledge’ and ‘enthralling style’.
Maggie O’Riordan, The Times’ Deputy Editor said; “Now more than ever, people will be looking to The Times for its unparalleled coverage and analysis of world events. All our staff deserve to be very proud of this achievement but we remain especially grateful to those journalists around the world who risk their own safety to inform our readers every day.”
