The Sunday Times and The Sun name their Cars of the Year
6th October 2023: The winners of the News UK Motor Awards 2023 were revealed last night at a gala winners ceremony held at The News Building, with coverage also running on print and digital channels across The Sunday Times, Driving.co.uk, The Sun and TheSun.co.uk.
The awards, now in their sixth year, continue to celebrate the best new vehicles across a huge range of segments, from family SUVs to sports cars, as well as city to adventure cars. The awards are judged by a panel of News UK’s expert automotive journalists including The Sun’s Rob Gill, Will Dron from Driving.co.uk, Nick Rufford from Sunday Times magazine and David Green on LUXX magazine.
The Porsche 911 Sport Classic was named The Sunday Times Car of the Year and the Volvo EX30 triumphed as The Sun Car of the Year. Formula One’s Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner was also honoured as the Motoring Personality of the Year. Virgin Radio Drive presenter and Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson presented the awards.
In addition, the Motor Awards once again recognised the hero models that have truly stood the test of time, both in terms of build and design quality as well as popularity with motorists. These cars have been innovated and reintroduced in different iterations over several decades and rightly deserve to be acknowledged as legendary icons of UK automotive. The Mercedes SL was named The Sunday Times Legend Car of the Year and the Porsche 911 crowned as The Sun Legend Car of the Year.
Rob Walsh, Motors Category Director, News UK, said:
“We’re delighted once again to shine a huge spotlight on the best vehicles from the last 12 months as we announce our Motor Award winners. Here at News UK we continue to provide extensive editorial coverage across our range of market leading titles, with our motoring experts' opinions valued and trusted by our audiences. We also offer our manufacturer partners highly effective commercial solutions across print, radio, digital and video, helping them reach and engage their target consumers at scale. Congratulations to all our well deserving winners.”
Rob Gill, Motors Editor, The Sun, said:
“The EX30 is everything we love about Volvo distilled in a smaller package. Safe and Scandi cool, Google tech, soundbar, eco materials, all of that good stuff, just at a price you’d never expect.
The EX30 is going to be a huge hit. We’re utterly convinced of it. Not only does it take home our Small SUV/Crossover of the Year crown, it is the stand-out winner as The Sun Car of the Year.”
Nick Rufford, Sunday Times Motoring Editor, said:
"To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the timeless 911, Porsche has built a retro version and it’s so good it has roared away with our overall Sunday Times Car of the Year prize. The Sport Classic manages to be the quickest manual in the Porsche stable, yet easygoing enough to take to the shops. Buy it in the understated grey that was the favourite of Steve McQueen, Hollywood actor and 911 enthusiast."
