Dame Deborah James' family reveal £11.3 million raised for Bowelbabe Fund
Marking Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, the family of the late Dame Deborah James have revealed that generosity from @The Sun’s readers has seen the Bowelbabe Fund reach a staggering £11.3 million, smashing Dame Debs’ target of £10 million.
When Dame Debs passed away on 28th June last year, the fund total stood at almost £7 million. Knowing one of Debs’ final wishes was to see it hit £10 million, The Sun urged readers to donate in the late columnist’s memory. Readers duly answered this call and almost ten months later, the total sits at £11.3 million so far.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hailed Dame Debs’ “tireless campaigning to educate us all about bowel cancer”. He said: “Dame Deborah brought honesty, she brought glamour but most of all she brought with her a key message to raise awareness, which has no doubt saved lives. Deborah’s legacy lives on, that ‘rebellious hope’ she told us all to have is not only smashing funding targets but continuing to save lives. Thank you Bowelbabe and to all those who have donated.”
